FAST TRAVELLING TROTTING TRAINER'S TRIP The Takanini trotting trainer.- F. J. Smith (lid: some fast travelling to attend, the Wnnganui meeting last Saturday, He failed to catch the limited express in Auckland on Friday night, but travelled in a motor-car to Frankton and joined it there, arriving in. Wanganui on Saturday morning After he had driven Haider to victory in. the last race he made ja, hurried, change of clothing and, entering a waiting motorcar, reached Marton in time to connect with the express from Wellington, which enabled him to return home on Sunday morning. With so many horses under his charge and, several meetings taking place in the province during the next few weeks, Smith is finding it necessary to save as "much time ns possible when travelling. Hia horses started four times at Wangnnui, .Nell Volo and Raider winning, and the latter also being second. The other horse, Guid Hairst. was unlucky not to win the Fosters Handicap.. INJURY TO BELLE 0' MINE PACER MAY NOT RACE AGAIN Although the pacer Bell o' Mine did not appear to receive a, very severe fp.ll when she reared and plunged before the start 9f the Wanganui Handicap last Saturday, it was evident before half a mile had been covered that she was unablp to put any dash into her work. At the end of a mile she was Under the whip, but dropped right back and was .finally eased up. Later it was found that she had broken a blood vessel in her head. W. Pope stated that she was- in a bad way and he was not sure whether she would bo able to race again. Belle o' Mine has been a good perfprmer over all distances this season, and showed rare promise as a two-miler when she won the Manawatu Plate in 4.34, uud again at Hawera, where she was second in. the Cup and' won the Waimate Plains - Handicap. She is a daughter of : Wairoa Belle', who paid the sensational dividend at Nelson some years ago. TIME IMPROVEMENTS PERFORMANCES AT WANGANUI With the exception of the President's Handicap, in which the first and second horses, Nell Volo and Sphinx, ran just a shade better than their handicaps, all the placed . competitors at the Wanganui trotting meeting showed improvement in times. This was particularly noticeable in the two chief events, the fast pace set by Teri Kingi on each occasion being mainly responsible. The greatest improvement was effected in the two miles race, in which three horses with no two miles credentials, Smooger, Raider and Teri Kingi, improved on their handicaps by 11 2-ss, 10 3-os and 10s respectively. The winner's 4m 32 3-5s is the fastest recorded for two miles on the Wangnnui course. Raider, .winner of the Morton Memorial Handicap, registered the very smart time of 2m 'lB 2-5s from 2m 5Gs, While Linella and Teri Kingi, who filled the minor places, also showed good times. As usual, the times in the novice and iniprovers' classes were well below the handicap standard, proving that the track, while not particularly fast, was in fine order.

The following summary gives the time improvements of tho placed candidates:—
