FIRST MATCHES OF SEASON COMPETITION FOR SAGE CUP Rugby football competitions were commenced in several of the country centres in tlio Auckland Province on Saturday. Tho following reports have been supplied by correspondents of the Herald:— Hamilton.—The Hamilton Rugby Union's Sage Cup championship commenced at Rugby Park. There were three games in the senior grade, two new teams, Railway and Horotiu, playing fr/r the first time. This will undoubtedly result in a more interesting competition than formerly, when only four teams were engaged. Results: Frankton, 13, beat Technical Old Boys, 8. Tries were scored for Frankton by Griffiths, Painton and Tui Rua. Two tries were converted by Everest. Old Boys' only try was scored by Blow, Pardington converting. Pardington also kicked a penalty goal. Old Boys, 21, beat Railway, 14. For Old Boys tries were scored by Parker (2), Weare (2) and Gilling. Gilling converted two and Hammond one. Railway's score was composed of three tries by Hemi, one by Glasgow and a conversion by Hemi. Horotiu Works, 9, beat Marist, 3. For Horotiu Cooper scored a try and penalty goals were kicked by Short and St. George. Marist's only score was a penalty goal kicked by Clarkin. Morrinsville, —The Morrinsville Rugby Union's senior championship opened in fine calm weather, and all four senior clubs fielded good teams. Kereone, last year's champions, defeated Terriers by 29 points to 3, although tho game was much more even than the margin of poirrts would indicate. The Terriers' forwards held their own, but the Kereone backs were superior. In the other game United beat Eastern Combined by 1G points to G after a hard, even forward game. Juniors: Old Boys, 14, v. Eastern B, 0; Kereone, 17, v. Terriers, 0; United, 9, v. Tainui, 3. Matamata. —Tho Rugby competitions were continued to-day, Patetere easily defeating Wardville, at Matamata, by 30 points to _G. In the first half play was fairly even, the score being B—o8 —0 in favour of Patetere. Patetere proved much faster and fitter in the second spell and added a further 22 points. For Patetere tries were scored by B. Inman, Quinn, Bennett, A. Brown, Fell and Spence. B. Inman converted three tries and kicked two penalties. For Wardville Carroll kicked a penalty goal and Newsome scored a try. In the other senior game Matamata defeated Hinuera,' at Hinuera, after an even contest by 18 points to 8. Tries were scored for Matamata by Carlson, Story and Sutherland (2), the first-named converting three. For Hinuera Settle and Hancock scored tries. Settle, of Hinuera, was the best back on the ground. Juniors: Matamata, 24, Kaokaoroa, 3; Hinuera, 10. Patetere, 9; Walton, 14, Waharoa, 5; Raungaiti, 33, Wardville, 0. Third grade: Hinuera, 8, Waharoa, 3: Patetere, 11, Matamata, 3; Wardville defaulted to High School. Cambridge.—The Rugby season commenced with a seven-a-side tournament at Victoria Square. Senior and junior competitions were held, teams taking part from the Northern, Hautapu, Leamington and United Clubs. In the senior semi-final Northern beat Leamington by 10 points to 8, and in the final beat Hautapu B by 19 points 3. In the junior final Hautapu beat Northern by 10 points to 5. Te Awamutu. —The Waipa Rugby Union's championship competitions were continued in fine weather. Seven games were played at headquarters and the other three in country centres. The standard of play in most of the games was quite good considering the time of the year. Third grade: H'.gh School, 20, Pirongia, 0; Ohaupo, 19, Ngutunui.2o; Te Awamutu, 3, Rovers, 23. Juniors: Ohaupo, 15, Te Mawhai, 5; Pirongia, 9. Arohena, 3. Seniors: Te Awamutu, 11, Pirongia, 9; Rovers, 5, Kihikihi, 3. Paeroa.—Seniors: High School Old Boys and United Public Service met at Paeroa. In the first spell Old Boys scored a try and Service kicked a penalty goal. Early in the second spell Pivott scored a pretty try by dummying his way through. He also converted. From a loose rll9 h Pivott later secured and dived over Williams converted. An unconverted try by Public Service made tho final score: Old Boys, 13; Public Service, G. At Netherton, West defeated Netherton by 3 points to 0. R. Swan scored for West. Juniors: Hikutaia, 3, drew with High School Old Boys, 3; West, G, defeated Netherton, 3. Tauranga.—The Rugby Union opened its cup competitions in ideal weather. In the senior competition for the Jordan Cup Cadets Old Boys defeated Athletics by 23 points to 3. Tries were scored by F. Olsen. S. Smith and W. Mansel, while E. Wilson dropped a field goal, kicked two penalty goals and converted two tries. I 1 or Athletics C Donovan scored. Matakana defeated le Puna by 11 points to 3. The results in the junior grade for tho Oliver Cup were: Matakana, 13, Te Puna, 12; RaMataua, 11 Baptist, 3: Country, 3, Matapihi, 3; Cadets, 27, Athletics, 0. Whitianga.—The Mercury Bay Rugby Union opened its season tn beauufut weather. Whitianga defeated Kuaotunu by 9 points to 3. Mr. J. R. Miller, of the Auckland Referees' Association, controlled the game. United beat Kaimarama at Coroglen by 14 points to 5. ■
