LESS UNEMPLOYMENT
NEW SOUTH WALES TOTALS DROP IN NINE MONTHS Official figures prepared by the New South Wales Department of Labour and Industry during March show that ' the number of persons registered with ■ the State labour exchanges in the Sydney metropolitan area was nearly 40,000 less all the end of February than nine months previously. The change in the State Government, -when the Labour Administration under Mr. J. T. Lang was dismissed, took place in May, 1932. On the National Administration under Mr. B. S. B. Stevens taking office it was found that the. registrations numbered 95,000. That figure had been brought down to 56,000 by the end of February. From the country the reports show that there have been great decreases in many localities, which alteration is-, in general proved by the lower applications for food relief and the increase in the wages tax. The information obtained by the department is to the effect that the majority of the people who have gone back to work have gone to industries and not to relief works.
