INCREASE IN BUSINESS LARGE BONUSES TO MEMBERS The report of the Australian Mutual Provident Society for the year ended December 31, 1932, the 84fcli of the society, discloses very satisfactory results. New assurances completed during the year in the ordinary department, including re-assurances of £54,633, totalled £10,351,020, as against £8,843,510 in the previous year. Jn the industrial department, policies assuring £3,259,301 were issued, compared with £2,057,324 in '1931. The amount paid to members or their representatives for the year was £5,510,825, making the amount paid since the establishment of the society £109,121,924. Claims by death in the ordinary department amounted to £2,371,701, including £905,609 for bonus additions, against £2,230,000 and £800,790 respectively. Endowment and endowmcntassuranco policies matured amounting to £1,443,824, including £164,178 for bonus additions. Policies assuring £7,219,143 and annuities amounting to £4,487 18s Id became void from other causes. Claims by death and maturity in the industrial department amounted to £734,864, as against £684.806 The total of the accumulated funds of the ordinary and industrial departments has been increased by £2,961,658 and now amounts to £86,258,111. The investment and contingencies reserve funds have been increased from £2,003,103 to £2,008,076. The society's investments in various loans to the Commonwealth and States of Australia, to New Zealand and other Dominions, to Croat Britain and to local government and other public bodies in Australia, New Zealand and other Dominions amount in, all to £48,054,720. The actuary's report shows a surplus of funds over liabilities in the ordinary department of £2,530,310, out of which £2,470,310 is to be allotted for distribution among the participating policyholders. This will provide reversionary bonuses of about £4,255,000. The surplus in the industrial department, which is to be distributed among participating policy-holders, is £259,750, providing reversionary bonuses amounting to about £357,000. The total assets have increased from £86,605,767 to £89,681,219, while the special reserves have been increased to £2,350,000. The total business on the books of the society (original sums assured and bonuses) lias increased from £260,698,117 to £263,451,027. The society has over £16,000,000 invested in New Zealand and all Now Zealand claims, bonuses, etc., are payable in New Zealand currency. Taxes payable have increased from £702,377 to £822,230, and but for this fact the bonuses payable to members would have been larger.
