CHUKOR IN THE SOUTH

BIRDS NOT DECREASING FAIR' NUMBER IN OTAGO [BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION] DUNEDIN, Wednesday Although the experiment of importing chukor into the North Island is reported to have proved a failure, inquiries made in Dunedin indicate that the Otago Acclimatisation Society has been rather more successful in its experiments with £he Indian bird. Reports from Hawea Flat state that a fair number of chukor were seen in that locality a fortnight ago, but there did not appear to be any increase in the number on previous years. They did not, in effect, seem to be going back, but, on the other hand, they did not seem to be increasing. It was hoped, however, that birds might have gone into the back country.
