OBITUARY

MR. HENRY WILCOX The death has occurred of Mr. Henry Wilcox, a pioneer of the King Country and formerly a well-known guide for the Taupo district and what is now National Park. Mr. Wilcox was a member of the first party sent to survey native lands just after the termination of the Hauhan outbreak under Te Kooti. In addition to assisting in the surveying for the construction of the Main Trunk railway line, Mr. Wilcox, who know the native tracks through the Taupo, Tolcaanu and Ruapehu district thoroughly, frequently acted as guide for parties desirous of traversing the regions. Mr. Wilcox witnessed many volcapic eruptions and was camped near Tarawera on the night of the great eruption. During the development of the National Park area, Mr. Wilcox was engaged in hut and track construction. Later ho settled in the district and was engaged in business until his death. Ho is survived bv Mrs, Wilcox.

Mil. MAKCUS WILKINS Ati early settler in the Auckland province, Mr. Marcus Wilkins, of Holensville, died on Sunday at the age of 79 years. Mr. Wilkins was horn in Coventry, England, and came to Now Zealand in 1862 with his parents in connection with the Nonconformist settlements of North Auckland. A passenger on the. vessel by which the family arrived in New Zealand was the late Sir Henry Brett. After living for a short period in Auckland, which was then little more than a village, the family secured an area of 140 acres near Mangowai. Eventually the late Mr. Wilkins, together with his father and a brother, engaged in goldmining on both the Hokitika and Thames fields, but Inter turned their attention to flax. Mr. Wilkins finally settled in the Kaipara district where ho established a successful flax mill. For-some years ho had lived at Helensville. He is survived by Mrs. Wilkins.
