ONEHUNGA FINANCES

DEBIT FOR PAST YEAR A financial statement for the year ended March 31 last, submitted by the town clerk to the Onehunga Borough Council last evening, showed that the receipts for rates fell short of the estimate by £3147, which shortage was stated to have contributed largely to the bank overdraft, which now stood at £5262. The loss on unpaid Crown rates was estimated at £2OO, but it was stated the amounts under this heading actually written off approximated £479 10s. The total amount of rates budgeted for was £31,159, whereas only £28,011 was received. There was a total deficit of £4399 on the year's operations. The revenue fell short of the estimate by £2127 and the payments exceeded the estimate by £2272. The Mayor, Mr. E. Morton, said in view of the existing economic conditions the results were not unsatisfactory. The real cause of the deficit was the non-payment of rates. Regarding complaints of the pollution of the Manukau Harbour at Westfield, the Auckland Harbour Board wrote stating that the board's engineer had visited the various outfalls and had made extensive inquiries, but ho was unable to find any cause for complaint. The conditions, however, he said, were far from perfect, but the question of demanding that the industries concerned should instnl extensive and costlv treatment plants, had been held in abeyance by the Health Department until some decision had been reached bv tho Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board as to its plans for the future.
