NAVIGATING OFFICER & APPOINTED TO H.M.S. DUNEDIN [fbom OUR own correspondent] . LONDON, March 14 Lieutenant-Commander R. F. Nichols will leave for New Zealand by the Ruahine on March 16 to take up his duties as navigating officer of H.M.S. Dunedin, and squadron uavieatir: officer. He joined Osborne C'olleee in May, 1914, and H.M.S. Vanguard, as midshipman, at Sea pa Flow in May. 1917. From September, 1922. to April. 1924, he served as lieutenant in H.M.S. Stuart, in the Mediterranean, and at the end of 1921 he qualified in navigation. For five mouths iu 1920 he served as assistant-navicator in H.M.S. Royal Oak, in the Atlantic Fleet. For 18 months from January. 1926, he was navigator, H.M.S. Bluebell, in China waters, and then he qualified in first-class ship navigation course. Durins 1929 Lieutenant-Commander Nichols ° was assistant-navigator to H.M.S. Hood (Atlantic Fleet) and as-sistant-navigator to H.M.S. Queen Elizabeth (Mediterranean Fleet), bub-' sequent ly lie served ori the btaft of the navigation school, and froitt August, 1930, to February, 1933. na served as navigator and first lieutenant commander of H.M.S. Danae. Lieutenant-Commander Nichols, who is unmarried, has a number of interests and hobbies, which include shooting, fishing, lawn tennis, golf and hockey. r«i l01 w Engineer-Commander K. i I '. man, who has been lent to the New Zealand Division, has booked his passage bv the Remuera, leaving on April 6. He was promoted to his present ran* in December, 1929. while serving in H.M.S. Rodney, and he has since been emploved on duties connected with gunmountiugs at H.M. Dockyard, Chat-iapavmaster-Lieutenant-Commander C. S. B* Hickman, another officer for tno New Zealand Division, will also le.no bv the Remuera. accompanied by Mr.. Hickman and their small daughter, aged two. He entered the Service m July, 1915. In January, 1918 he became pavmaster-sub-lieutenant, vears later he was promoted to pa>-master-lieutenant, and to Ins present rank in January, 1928. Durmg the ur he served in the Queen in the Mediteiranean. as well as in the A aliant an Inflexible in the Grand Fleet, binco then he has been on the China Station in the East Indies and at oibrauar from 1928 to 1031.
