FOUR JOCKEYS HURT

HOUSES FALL TOGETHER accident in flat race NONE IN SERIOUS CONDITION [by teleobaph —own* correspondent] CHRISTCHURCH, Monday Four jockeys were injured and one horse was so severely hurt that it had to be destroyed in a mishap during the running of the Papanui Handicap at the Canterbury Jockey Club's race meeting to-day. At the entrance to the straight Scarlet Kobe fell and brought down Heather Glow, Errantry and St. Joan. Scarlet Robe had to be destroyed. C. E. Eastwood, the rider of Errantry, received a fracture of the left leg* 11. E. Coveney (Scarlet Robe) and A?Russell (St. Joan) suffered concussion and head injuries, and A. H. Eastwood (Heather Glow) was severely bruised in the shoulder. Eastwood was able to go home, but the other three jockeys are in hospital. None is in a serious condition. MISHAP AT ELLERSLIE FALL IN STEEPLECHASE As a result of his mount falling in the Autumn Steeplechase at Ellerslie yesterday, a jockey, A. Gilmer, aged 33, married, received concussion. The jockey, who resides in Hinau Street. Frankton Junction, was riding Creina's King when the horse, which was leading, fell at the second fence of the double with one round to go. Gilmer was thrown heavily, and was taken to the Auckland Hospital in a St. John ambulance. His condition last evening was satisfactory.
