UNUSUAL CHARGE
WOMAN MOTORIST'S LAPSE INTOXICATION ADMITTED An unusual charge was preferred in the Police Court in Invercargill the other da}-, when a married woman, whoso uame was suppressed, was charged with intoxication while in charge of a motor-ear. Through her counsel she pleaded guilty. It was stated that a constable had found the defendant with her ear backed into a ditch on the road. Sho was in an intoxicated condition. Counsel said that defendant was a married woman and a mother and sho felt her position very keenly. She was very abstemious as a general rule, but she had been returning from a country trip and had stoppod at a hotel afid had two "square eins." Owing to the cold and lack of food tho liquor had affected her. Counsel urged that a nominal penalty only be imposed. This, with a suspension of tho driver's licence, might meet the case. He also asked that the woman's name should not bo published. A fine of £1 was imposed and defendant's driver's licenco was cancelled for 12 months.
