SILVER SCORN'S OAKS GOOD FINISH IN PRESIDENT'S CARFEX BEATS GRAND TALK The attraction ot seeing Silver Scorn in action provided the only interest in tho Great Northern Oaks and her dividend although naturally small was really surprisingly pood. It was remarkable that Gold Musk, a maiden who had not previously even boon placed in a race, should have been better supported than Amnion Ra's sister Prolyxo. who has a number of wins to her credit. Prolyxo disposed of Gold Musk almost as easily as she herself was beaten by Silver Scorn. Taking the lead about seven furlongs from homo the champion filly won in effortless style, hard held and with her ears pricked. The feature of the President's Handicap was the tussle for supremacy between Carfex and Grand Talk, who were well clear of tho field. Grand Talk made her effort a trifle early, a sharp run from the throo furlongs post carrying her to the lead at the straight entrance. Carfex was reserved until later for his run and this was an important factor in his success. Just at the post Grand Talk came again and the margin was very narrow. Iler performance was good, for she covered more ground than the winner, who was always nicely placed on the rails. Aga Khan was prominent throughout and so was Plying Prince, but Seatown was always well back, although ho improved a littlo in the straight. Psychologist failed after forcing the pace for a mile. Billy Boy's fine jumping stood him in good stead in the Brighton Hurdles and his performance was exceptionally good. Ho was never far away from the leaders and after taking command half-a-milo from homo was not seriously troubled to win well. Emancipation was a long way back until ho moved up turning into the straight, and then he was very wide out. Hidden as ho was ho did remarkably well to get second, lioyal Visitor's forward running was a surprise and it was only by a nitrrow margin that Emancipation deprived him of second place. Lucess failed to finish on after following the winner into the straight, arid Cruachan faded out badly. Prince of Orango was set a hard task as pacemaker under his big weight. Preo Air, who early had only Emancipation behind her, was battling on at the end. Easter Handicap Contest L'Allegro, on tlio win machine, and Sunny Sky, on the place machine, were tho main fancies for tho Easter Handicap, but neither succeeded in gaining a place. Golden Wings went out fast and setting a torrid paco quickly had the field strung out. Entering tlio straight clear ho was challenged at the distance by Alunawhenuu and Lordly Knigiit, Out he maintained las brilliant speed to score decisively, no established a race record oi 1.U7 '2-6, Dealing Keremuulia's time in by l-6s. It was a poiioimanco that stamped Golden Wnifes as being one of tno greatest miiers yet produced in Aew Zea land. -uanawhenui , assisted by the easing of track conditions, ran right up to lus best form, going under only to tno exceptional speed of the winner. Lordly Knigiit did not begin as smartly as expected, but he took up a handy position in the middle stages and demonstrated his ability to run a mile right out. Lady Quex and Inflation, who dead-heated for fourth, both finished well and showed promise of a return to form. L'Allegro trailed the pacemaker for seven furlongs, but failed to maintain the fast pace set. Paganelli and Sunny Sky were the chief disappointments. After being handily placed in the middle stages neither was equal to taking a part in the finish. Chief Cook and Sea Ruler, both badly placed at the end of a furlong, were running on at the end. Gold Trail was fairly well placed after going three furlongs, but failed to show her true form. Aiguille was never prominent Impasto's Attractive V/in ' Impasto demonstiatcd that his form on the country cucuit was not correct by winning the Champagne Stakes in attractive style. Alter 1/jing seriously challenged at the distance, lie came away again and was doing best of all when the post was reached. Deputy Ruler raid D'Artagnan both finished solidly under pleasure and were responsible for creditable performances. The hot favourite Princess Dcreen had every chance, but after racing prominently for six furlongs, weakened into fourth place. Rereatu showed a fine turn of speed, but, as usual, j lacked tenacity at the finish. | Although the Mangore Steeplechase field was not high-class, all the competitors gave good exhibitions of jumping, Ruby Meteor, ' who dislodged her rider when tiring at the i last fence, being the only one who failed |to complete tho course. Simeon, who showed promise as a steeplechaser at Paeroa, gave evidence of further improvement by winning decisively from the favourite Gallamart. Callamart and Neil run solid laces after jumping well throughout, but both lacked the brilliancy of tho winner. Creina's King, tho big dividend-payer at Paoroa, just missed a place after finishing well, and is a prospect for the future. Absent and Domo were responsible for mos'. of tho paco. but failed to run on after being freely used in the early stages. Royal Reign was distinctly sore before the race, but performed gamely to finish fifth. Claremoro failed to show any dash and pulled up lame. His racing career is probably finished Arcado was making a good showing when he hit a fenco hard on tho hill the last time. Catalogue Shows Promise There were only three two-year-olds from outside tlio Auckland Province in the Onslow Stakes, arid they filled tho places. Catalogue, a stable-mate of Princess Hereon, recorded a good effort by finishing stoutly after being disappointed when making his run at tho distance. He was running on strongly at tho end and appears to have a big margin for improvement. Sea Fox. a good-aelioncd hull-brother to Sealown, did extremely well to get second after being drawn wide out at the barrier. Rapper also came home in good fatyle utter being forced to cover extra ground at the home turn. Star Artist showed speed, but failed to run oil, and she will probably bo better for the race. Coronis. Gold Pocket and Queen Nona all made fair showings, Queen Nona Hoing very wide on the homo j turn. Cherry King failed to begin well and was never dangerous. The second double figures dividend of the day was paid in tho linden Handicap, when the maiden performer' Kiltowyn led from I end to end. Ho was having his first race i for several months and confirmed the good j impression created by his track-work, Gallant camcf from the middle of the field to finish second, and is evidently back to the form lie displayed when he won ft double at Ellerslie last .Tune. Master Brierly proved himself a first-class hack by running | third with 9.7. after going wide round tho I leaders at 111*) home turn. Run was badly placed early, and finished well in fourth i phic>> The favourite Senegal was in front j of Royal Gallant entering the straight, but i failed to run on. Muff was never really dangerous, but Blnnford and Desert Star wfre close up at the finish. Desert Star in particular finishing solidly. Currajoncr. Rrcefield and Mahkill were handy to tho lender throughout, but all weakened in tho run home. ELLERSLIE WINTER EVENTS Nominntions for the Great Northern Steeplechase. "Winter Steeplecbiise.
