TIMBER INDUSTRY

WHITE PINE ORDERS REDUCED WEST COAST MILLS CLOSING The demand for white pine, which has not been over-brisk, has slackened considerably on the west coast of the South Island. during the past few weeks. Orders are getting very scarce and already some of the .mills have been closed, while others will probably ba closed shortly. The timber industry, especially with rimu, has been passing through a quiet period and there does not seem to be any prospect of an early improvement. Only comparatively a small percentage of the mills will be affected by the slackness in the white pine market as few of the mills have white pine to cut. Practically ail of the timber that has been exported to Australia for some time has been white pine, and the present slackness, which is not expected to show any improvement until July, will affect considerably the earnings of the Greymouth waterside workers.
