CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES GOOD PROGRESS IN ALL EVENTS McKEOWN DEFEATS MARTIN Although rain prevented an earlv start with tho hard-court championships ot the Windmill Road courts on Saturday. _ood progress was made with all events. There were no surprises with tho possible exceotion that A. McKeown defeated G. Martin. The Eden and Epsom player was exceptionally safe, and Martin, being forced to reduce his pace to gam accuracy, was unable to beat his opponent when it became a matter of steadiness. Mcsdames darken and Hay did well to carry tho Misses Macfarlano to an B—G second set. Wind and lack of backgrounds did uoi. make for good Dlaving conditions. A high wind marred play slightly. Although matches played were mainly in initial rounds, some interesting exhibitions were given. The tourney has attracted a large number of entrants and the newer clubs in the Franklin Association area aro well represented. J. C. Charters, last year's champion, is not defending his title.
