g; r —gome years ago the followine appeared in the New Zealand press:—What caused the Cenotaph to be the national memorial of the British Empire? Tlio answer is closely associated with the plan to bury an unknown soldier with honour amonc the famous dead of the British Empire. The idea originated with Mr. J. a. Wilson, editor of a London newspaper, that an unknown warrior should be buried at the base of the Cenotaph in Whitehall. This was, however, objected to on the ground that aCen<> taph signified an ompty tomb Mr Wdson then suggested that Westm n ster Abbey would be a suitable burial -place. C - LhWlh-
