MEAT FOR EXPORT

LAMB KILLINGS HIGHER HEAVY FALL IN MUTTON BEEF AND PIGS INCREASE Killings of lamb for export at New Zealand works during the six months of the current season ended March 31 show an increase of about 9 per cent over the total for the corresponding period last season, but mutton killings are 30 per cent lower, according to tho latest returns of tho Now Zealand Meat Producers' Board. The output of beef quarters has been five times higher, while pig killings have been doubled. Shipments of lamb to tho United Kingdom increased during tho period, but mutton shipments declined heavily, so that the totals together show a reduction of about 6 per cent on last year's figure. LOCAL RATES HIGHER LAMB AND MUTTON PROGRESS OF KILLING SEASON Following the improvement in the London market for lamb, an advance of has been made in the local export rates. Some grades of mutton also show a firming, but other prices, are unchanged. The killing season in the rsorth is now drawing to a close, although fair quantifies of stock are still going forward to the works. The restriction placed on beef killings, owing to the record output of meat and dairy produce from the province, has been eased somewhat and the works in Auckland and South • Auckland are now taking all classes of stock. J.IIO North Auckland works, however, are still closed to beof, but this restriction is expected to be lifted 011 May 1. Few lambs are now offering, but there are some large consignments frdm time to time. Mutton killings have declined considerably, due to the tact that local rates aro well above export value and the local market seems capable of absorbing all that is offering. Pigs are going forward to the works penerally in better condition, and it appears that the season for these is lengthening owing to better methods of fattening.
