THE CANTEEN FUNDS
AUCKLAND ALLOCATIONS TWO PAYMENTS WITHHELD Advice that the payments for February and March of allocations totalling £523 made by the Canteen Trust Board to the Auckland Returned Soldiers' Association have been withheld pending an investigation into prior disbursements of the Auckland Association, has been received by Mrs. E. Nicol, president of the Soldiers' Mothers' League, from Mr. A. Harris, M.P. Mrs. Nicol stated on Saturday that Mr. Harris had been requested to investigate the position, and had reported that tho amounts allocated to Auckland this year were £243 for January, £2G2 for February and £261 for March. Only the January payment had been made, however, the remainder being withheld for the present by the Wellington executive. The general (secretary of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association, Mr. S. J. Harrison, of Wellington, visited Auckland last week to investigate the matter. The retiring president of the Auckland Association, Sir George Richardson, said last evening that the amounts that had been withheld would be paid as soon as the Canteen Trust Board had received from Auckland certain receipts and other documents in tho required form. Owing to changes in secretaries in Auckland, certain information required by the board had not been sent in the necessary form. The money would, however, be available for the new executive of the association, which wOuld be elected this month. The delay might thus bo a blessing in disguise, as the money would be in hand when most required, during tho winter.
