PERSECUTION OF JEWS

Sir, —To the hearts made sensitive by age-long religious persecution its recurrence to-day in a land among the socalled "apostles of kultur'' has made not only Jews, but all civilised nations, stand aghast. In the darkness of our despair for the sufferings of our coreligionists in Germany the sermon of the Rev. E. D. Patchett on Sunday evening, April 9, has not only stirred our hearts in gratitude, but shines as a softlv-moulded, lustrous pearl in an atmosphere of unfathomable darkness. Mr. Patchett not only embraced the psychological moment for his sermon, but we feel sure his sentiments are voiced by all those animated by truly Christian principles. In the words of Goethe, "The gods need many a noble one their work on earth to ~do; they' look to me and you." In this spirit has , our friend responded to the call, and all the Jews in New Zealand, and wherever his sermon may go, will be grateful for his spiritual advocacy. The past is past and we are not a revengeiul people, e only know that under the fundamental law of . action and reaction is adjustment possible. So we, i under time's ameliorating balm, forgive j them, for they know not what thev | do. I trust the Rev. E. D. Patchett, ; who is quite unknown to me, will acj cept this small tribute from one who j senses m him a minister to souls distressed and a noble worker in the vineyard of the Lord of Love and Com- | P' ass,on - Miriam Hyams.
