CROWN MORTGAGORS
DRAINAGE RATES UNPAID TAUPIRI BOARD'S LOSSES [from OUR OWN" correspondent] HAMILTON. Thursday Heavy losses have been incurred by the Taupiri Drainage Board through Crown mortgagors being unable to pay their rates and through the board being unable to collect them from the Crown. It was stated at the meeting of the board to-day tbat arrears of rates totalling £7OO were due to the board, while the . annual loss was £4OO. The board could compel private mortgagors to pay, but had 110 redress against the Crown, which held the first mortgage over most of the land involved. The result was that other ratepayers were called 011 to meet the additional burden. The board decided to convene a meeting of local bodies with the object of arranging for a deputation to wait 011 the Minister of Lands and place the position before him with a view to removing the anomaly.
