HAWERA HORSES TRAINING FOR AUCKLAND AGA KHAN AND CARFEX COPEY UNLIKELY TO COME [from OUlt own corkkspondent] HAWERA, Thursday The training of Hawera horses who are to race at Ellerslie and Feih'ing at Easter was carried out under fine weather conditions this morning. The plough track was most used and was in excellent order.

Special interest was taken in the gallop of the Auckland Easter Handicap candidate Aga Khan. Aga Khan had as companions Awaken and Chief Line. The trio set out at a fast clip to run seven furlongs, going the reverse way round. After a couple of furlongs Awaken found tho pace too fast and lost her inside ■osition, dropping back a couple of lengths at the threo furlongs. Aga Khan and Chief Line reached tho half-mile in 50 l-5s and six furlongs in 1.16 1-5, and finished the seven together in 1.30 2-5, with Awaken some lengths back. Before leaving for his last trip to Auckland Aga Khan registered a faster gallop over tho same course. His trainer has been somewhat easy with him lately, but a couple of sharpeningup gallops should him strip as fit as hands can make him. Chief Line hung on well, registering quite a good performance. Awaken finished on well. Two other Auckland candidates, Carfex and Attentive, worked the reverse way. Jumping off together, they took just on 51s for half a rr,ile, 1.17 for six furlongs, and 1.31 i for seven furlongs, with Carfex going the better and half ji length in front. Carfex went well, pulling up in good shape, and his race at Stratford has worked some improvement in him. Attentive is not a brilliant track-worker, but his honesty is undoubted and he almost invariably runs a good race.

Gibraltar, who is engaged r,t Feilding, went sluggishly over the first part of seven furlongs, which took 1.34. Davistock and Miss Cavendish, who both raced at Stratford, have since been given light exercise and should be nicely freshened up for their Feilding engagements. Richfield is rapidly recovering from his disability and was given a sprint over three furlongs, which he accomplished comfortably in 381s. Provided that he makes the anticipated progress. Richfield will fulfil his engagements at Feilding. . R. Brough's two-vear-old Rapper sprinted five furlongs on the grass, going tho reverso way. in 1.3 J. Chief Link (W. Grindley) gave another capital exhibition over the schooling hurdles, jumping six fences like an old hand. So far he has only thken his fences slowly and interest will attach to his performance when he is asked to race at them For a beginner no horse has shaped better on the local Owing to bis disappointing displays so far this season, Copey is unlikely to make the trip to Auckland for tho Autumn Steeplechase. G. Duncan. Fryer s apprentice, is mentioned as Aga Khan's rider in the Easter Handicap nnd is to ride Carfex in the President's Handicap. PASSENGERS FOR SYDNEY LA MODERNE'S OWNER SAILS Mr A. F. M. Symes, of Hastings, owner of La Modeine. left Auckland for Sydney by tho Monowai yesterday to see bis filly race in the A.J.C- Rt- Lec er other engagements at Randwick. Mr. John Donald, of Westmere stud, Wanganui, whose two-year-old Prestige, is a member of J. T. Jomieson's team in Sydney, also left Mr. W. Iliggins, of Wellington, and Mr. tlive Matthews, of Hamilton, were among other racehorse owners who made the trip. TE AROHA COMPETITORS TIMES AND HANDICAPS BY ABAYDOS

While the times recorded in the £wo miles events at Thames Inst week were not fast it was worthy of notß that Pageant and Brentlight, who finished first and second in both tho Cup and Goldfields Handicap, had the best grafs track records to their credit. Another striking feature of these races ■was that Kewpie's Triumph, who finished very close up third- each day, had tho slowest time against him and on the first day he improved on his previous record of 4.39 2-5 by 2 2-ss. When Brentlight defeated Pageant for second place at level marks in the President's Handicap at the Auckland Christmas meeting he clocked 4.25. and Pageant 4.25 2-5, and in the Thames Cup Pacreant had 12yds in his favour. In the Goldfields Handicap he gave Brentlight 12yds and again defeated him after a hard finish, but each day they took 10 to 11 seconds longer than their Christmas records. Pegaway, who is having bis first race in Cup company. has had only one two miles race, but lie put up a very creditable performance in running 4.33 from a 4.43 mark for second place. Brent Zolock has no fast time at. the journey, and his best performances during the last two seasons have been registered over shorter courses. Kewpie's Guy has won several useful two miles races, but her best time, 4.32 2-5, was registered at Epsom for a. place. With a dirt track record of 4.26 1-5 Great Delight has the greatest allowance in his favour on the present handicap. The following table shows the best placed records of each competitor, together with the present handicaps:— Best Hdcp. Place time Great Delight .. 4.34 4.26 1-5 2nd Pegaway . . 434 4.33 2nd Prince Pedro • . 4.34 4.30 2-5 Ist.
