BOUND FOR ANTARCTIC

PLANS OF ADMIRAL BYRD FOOD AND OIL SUPPLIES STRICT WATCH ON COST [by telegraph OWN correspondent] DUNEDIN, Friday The supply officer of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition, Mr. V. H. Czegka, has written to tlio local agents, Messrs. i H. L. Tapley and Company, as follows: —"Wo are practically entirely dependent on donations from domestic and foreign manufacturers to enable us to carry out our plans regarding the second expedition. We have been assured of all our food supplies, including meats, all the required coal, petrol, kerosene and oil. An oil company has agroed to transport all the petrol and oil in its tanker to Dunedin. You will readily understand our desire to provide refrigerating facilities, as wo are endeavouring to have all supplies requiring refrigeration shipped directly to New Zealand, where they can be taken care of pending our arrival. "Admiral Byrd will point out to you the great necessity of cutting the cost of this undertaking to a minimum, and in view of past experience wo are quite confident that you will do your utmost to co-operate with us. Several members of the old expedition are looking forward to the day when they will again have the pleasure of seeing you and your pleasant country." Admiral Byrd's second Antarctic expedition will leave the TJnited States about the \latter part of September, 1933, and will make its base, as on the previous occasion, at Dunedin. According to earlier advice received by the New Zealand agents, about 500 tons of coal will be shipped ahead to Dunedin, together with one or two aeroplanes, 15,000 gallons of petrol, 40 tons of food, from 30 to 50 tons of dog food and about 50 tons of other supplies. A wooden ship, the Bear of Oakland, has been purchased for the expedition.
