DERATING QUESTION

SOUTH AUCKLAND VIEWS REQUEST TO GOVERNMENT [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Friday The subject of derating was discussed at the South Auckland conference of the Farmers' Union, at Hamilton. Several members of county councils were present by invitation, and expressed their sympathy with the principle of derating, but pointed out the practical difficulties of putting the scheme into full effect. \

The conference passed a remit stating that in its opinion the time was long overdue when land should be relieved of roading rates, and in lieu thereof that the users of the roads should be called upon to pay according to use. The conference decided to request the Government to put derating into effect at the earliest possible moment.
