DISORDER IN CALCUTTA
WILD SCENES OCCUR NATIONALISTS DEFY BAN CALCUTTA. April 2 There were wild scenes yesterday afternoon on the Haitian, an open space in the centre of Calcutta. An attempt was made to hold the banned annual meeting of the Indian National Congress. Hundreds of Nationalist sympathisers gathered but every attempt on the part of speakers to move a resolution was stopped by the police, who finally dispersed the meeting. Hundreds were arrested. The police used their batons freely and many of the Nationalists received broken heads.
