BANK OF ENGLAND LARGE GOLD HOLDINGS British Wireless RUGBY, April 2 A reason l'or the reversion • to £260,000,000 as tho Bank of England's fiduciary issue is to be found in tho bank's recent big acquisitions of gold. Since January, when the present influx of gold began, the Bank pf England has acquired nearly £64,000,000 in gold. Theso additional acquisitions have increased the cover for tho note issue. BRITISH BALANCE-SHEET POSITION SATISFACTORY British Wireless RUGBY, April 2 The national balance-sheet is generally considered to bo highly satisfactory in view of the great difficulties of tho past year. If the December war debt payment to the United States had not vitiated tho calculations of the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr. Neville Chamberlain, the Budget would have resulted in a surplus of £5,250,000. The Treasury returns had little effect yesterday morning upon gilt-edged securities on the London Stock Exchange and they remained steady. War loan, 3J per cent, were quoted at £lOl 2s 6d per cent, compared with £lOl 5s on Thursday. QUOTATIONS FOR SILVER British Wireless RUGBY, April 1 Silver is quoted to-day at 17 7-16 d an oz. spot and 17id forward, compared with 17gd and 17 7-16 d yesterday.
