UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

THIS YEAR'S ENROLMENTS REDUCTION OF BURSARIES The enrolments of students at the Auckland University College are so far somewhat behind those at tho corresponding period of last year, and although it is too early to know definitely it seems likely that there will bo an appreciable decrease on last year's final total of 1157 students. At the end of the third week this year there were 962 students enrolled, as against 975 last year. Tho total to tho end of March was 991, but the intervention of Easter last year makes a comparison to the end of March last year inapplicable. Taken by faculties the figures are, on the whole, remarkably steady, showing in most cases only a trifling decrease. The figures in parentheses aro those at the corresponding period of last year: — Arts, 403 (412); science, 128 (117); commerce, 183 (181); law, 83 (84); engineering, 38 (46); architecture, 45 (44); music, 12 (20); journalism, 23 (21); medicine, 20 (2S); home science, 1 (4); dentistrv, 7 (9); agriculture, 9 (11). Although a number of training college students has come from Wellington to Auckland on account of tho closing of tho college there, tho total number of such students taking university classes has been greatly reduced owing to the fact that practically no more students are being admitted to the training colleges. The figures have fallen from 115 last year to 114 this yea r. Sweeping economies have been made by tho Government in the bursaries under which it pays half the fees up to a maximum of £lO of certain students. The number of "cash" students, that is, of those who are wholly responsible for their own fees, has increased from 165 last year to 569 this year, while tho numbor in receipt of bursaries has fallen from 365 to 279. Tho position is even moro strikingly shown when first-year students only aro considered. Tho number of first-year student bursars has been reduced from 157 out of a total of 322 now students last year to 30 out of a total of 298 this year. Thus tho now students paying their own way have increased from 165 to 268 already.
