CAMBRIDGE WINS

OXFORD BEATEN BOAT RACE RECORD 1 TENTH VICTORY RUNNING CREWS MAKE SLOW TIME CROWDED RIVER BANKS By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright (Received April 2, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, April 1 The university boat race Oxford versus Cambridge was rowed to-day from Putney to Mortlake. Cambridge won by two and a-quarter lengths in 20m. 575. The fact that Cambridge won the toss, enabling that crew to take the shorter course, was a large factor in the victory. The crews were moderate and the time was slow in spite of the generally favourable conditions. Oxford led by half a length for the first mile. Cambridge gained the advantage later and forged ahead and won easily, although Oxford rowed its best race for 10 years. Cambridge now has a record of 10 successive wins. The estimated attendance was nearly 1,000,000 the river banks being crowded along the four miles course. The Oxford crew has now suffered 10 consecutive defeats in the university boat race. Tho longest sequence of losses suffered bv Cambridge was nine, from 1861 to 1869 and again from 1890 to 1898.
