NOTES ON THE RACING

KUINI BEATS GOLDEN EAGLE PEGAWAY AGAIN SUCCESSFUL VICTORY FOR PUKEMIRO BY ARCHER Three-year-olds were again to tho fore in the slow class trot, the Tararu Handicap, when Kuini and Golden Eagle finished first and second, thus reversing the positions they filled on tho first day. Kuini was slow to strike a gait and Golden Huia was quickly in tho lead from Colleen Murphy, Golden Eagle and Prince Abdallah. with Kuini a good way back seventh. Five and a-ha.'f furlongs from homo Golden Iluia broke and Golden Eaglo assumed command to be clear at tho top, with Kuini in hot pursuit. Kuini maintained her run splendidly at the finish and won by three lengths from Golden Eagle, who beat Golden Huia by a similar margin. Wiriwhata was a moderate fourth, followed by Kohewah. Colleen Murphy and Prince Abdallah. Tho first two again outclassed tho others. Kuini going 9 4-5 seconds better than handicapped to do. Her performance was distinctly pleasing for a three-year-old and she looks like being good. When she lost ground at the start and got a long way behind Golden Eagie. who was conceding her 36 yards, her prospects did not appear I bright, but she trotted faultlessly over the last six furlongs and won going away. Golden Eagle again raced well, but tho others were far from impressive. Golden Huia wa3 one of tho outsiders of tho field and returned a lino price for third. First day's form worked out fairly well in the Karaka Handicap, when, in the absenco of Thursday's winner, Cimarron. Lislea and Our Summer finished first and second. Lislea reached 1 the front auickly from Min Bells, Jester and Student Princo and he was well clear along the back, where Min Bells broke. Our Summer began to come into the picture at this stage, but was too far behind to reach Lislea. who won by two lengths. Jester was two and a-half lengths away third, just beating Shining Metal, who was followed by Worthy Chief, Red Hope and Student Prince. Winner Improves on Handicap Lislea always looked a winner oijcq he reached tho front, but ho had nothing in reserve at the finish, where his driver had to keep him up to his work. However, ho went 14 seconds better than handicapped to do and recorded bettor time than when ho finished third 011 tho first day. Our Summer would probably have won only for beginning badly, as he was giving Lislea a big start when the field had settled down and did well to get as closo as ho did. Besides Our Summer. Red Hope, Camelia and Free Gift also broke up at tho start. On the strength of his decisive win on the first_ day Francis Lincoln was tho popular choice for tho Totara Handicap, but he was beaten into third place. Mythorpo made the early running from Wee Machine and Rey do Quest, with Pukemiro heading tho others. Mythorpe was etill in charge entering the straight from Pukemiro, Silver Bingej, Homeward and Weo Machine, with the others bunching. Once in lino for homo Pukemiro assumed command and won by half-a-length from Homeward, who was the same distance ahead of Francis Lincoln. Jackie Thorpe was fourth, succeeded by Mythorpo..Wee Machine and Silver Bingen. An inquiry was held concerning tho running of Francis Lincoln, but no action was taken. Francis Lincoln tailed the field most of tho way. but finished strongly to get third. His timo for the milo and ahalf was three-fifths of a second slower than on tho first day, when ho scored easily. Homeward also finished on very solidly and it appeared as if Pukemiro was a shade lucky to beat her. Prince Pedro Again Unlucky The Goldfields Trotting Handicap provided an interesting liirish-'and Pageant just got up, to beat Brentlight and score his third success af t]io meeting. Pageant was slow away, but did not lose much ground and at the end of a milo he was fairly handy, although still running last. Up to this stage Great Delight and Carnui had been tho leaders and tho pace hud been slow. Carnui just led Prince Pedro I and Great Delight turning along the back, where Kewpie's Triumph, Brentlight and Pageant were close behind. A little more than half-a-milo from home Kewpie's Triumph and Brentlight sprinted 1 through and Princo Pedro appeared to get squeezed and broko. losing all chance. Kewpie's Triumph then reached tho front and led into the straight from Brentlight. Pageant and Carnui. Brentlight was just in front half-way down the running, but Pageant woro him down in tho last littlo bit and beat him by a head. Kewpie's Triumph was another head away third and Carnui was fourth, with Princo Pedro and Great Delight next. Pageant was able to -get up handy in the first mile and outstayed, the others at the finish. He 6tripped particularly fit and hi 3 splendid condition was a great factor in his successes at the meeting. Brentlight paced another honest race and Kewpie's Triumph also made a good showing, just failing in the last half-furlong. Carnui failed to do as well as expected, but Prince Pedro was unlucky, as he was going easily ut tho time he left his feet. The Ngatea Handicap proved easy for Raider, who was supported down to a 6hort prico on both totr.lisators. Raider began smartly to be in second position behind Worthy Chief before going two furlongs and tho result was never in doubt when ho assumed command about half-a-milo from home. Gold Seam was always second over tho last few furlongs and beat Donee by a length and a-half. Cogent was fourth, followed by Peter Grattan and Tr.vment. Raider outclassed the-' others and won with a lot in hand. Cimarron broke a hopplo early and was pulled up after going half-a-liiile. Hot Favourite Wins Tho improving Pegaway was at a short prico on both machines for tho . Hauraki Handicap and ho justified the contidenco reposed in him by scoring nicely. Frco Logan broko up at tho start and stopped Realty, putting him right out of tho contest, while Pegawijy just escaped the trouble. Homeward and Rangihau led early from Lady Coronado and Oliver Thorpe. Rangihau headed Homeward after going half-a-milo and led her into tho straight, with Pegaway just behind, and Dad's Hope heading tho other 3. Pegaway overtook the leaders half-way down tho straight and won by a head from Homeward, who defeated Raiigiliau by three lengths, i Ludy Coronado was fourth, succeeded by : Dad's Hope and Oliver Thorpe. J Pegaway did not go quite as fast as on j the first day, but recorded another very i pleasing performance. He always had tho ,! measure of Homeward over the last half- , j furlong and F. J. Smith was content to ; let him keep just in front. Homeward patod : | another solid race and her turn to win | should come shortly. Rangihau displayed j some improv<ynent and paid a good price for third, Beasio Parrish. at a short price on both machines, made a one-horso race of t\.> Ornahu Handicap.. Beginning very smartly, she soon drew away from Marble Star, who attempted to go with her early, and along the back sho was out four lengths from Zanzibar, with the others strung out. Bessie Parrish increased her lead crossing tho top and came into the straight well cloar to win easing up by three lengths Zanzibar, who tired badly in the last I ' ! long, and just ber.t Billy Carbine by a i nock. Explosion was fourth, followed by Moko Girl and Marble Star. Brent Zolock Improves Bessio Parrish was improved for her race on the first day and went six seconds better than when she finished second 011 Thursday. Zanzibar also did several seconds better, but tired badly at tho end in ttio faster-run race. Exrilosion wont iv fraction of a second better than on Thursday, but could never get near tho leaders, whoso improvement made his task must too difficult. Narrow margins separated tho placed horses in tho Puru Handicap and Brent Zolock prevailed from Pageant, who lust missed winning his fourth race at the meeting. Carnui led for over a furlong, when Brent Zolock sprinted to tho front to bo clear along the back from Carnui. Great Parrish, Brentlight. Direct Morning and Pageant Carnui broke nei'.r tho halfmile and fell back last. Brent Zolock being left fivo lengths clear of Great Parrish. Entering the straight. Brent Zolock was out several lengths from Brentlight and Pageant, with Grouty Pn.rrish. who tangled near tho turn, and Kewpie's Triumph next. In a great race homo Brent Zolock lasted long enough to win by a neck from Pageant, who beat Brentlight by a head Kewpie's Triumph was fourth, followed by Great Parrish, Direct Morning and Auto Machino. Brent Zolock went much better than on tho first day, when 110 was slow away and tired after sprinting to the front early. His performances in Auckland indicate that 110 is a better second-day horso than a first, as this is tho third occasion that 110 has come to the province and won on tho second day after failing on tho first, Pageant nnd Brentlight. went their usual honest races. Kewpie's Triumph also shaped creditably and may do better at his next attempt in a short race. TROTTING FIXTURES April B—To Arolia Trotting Club. 1 April 15, 17—Hawera Trotting Club.
