TROTTING AT THAMES

FORM WORKS OUT WELL THREE MORE WINS FOR SMITH ANOTHER BETTING INCREASE Fiist day's form was strikingly reproduced at Thames on Saturday, when the annual trotting meeting was concluded in fine weather. The result in the principal event, the Goldfields Trotting Handicap, was exactly tho same as that in tho Thames Trotting Cup 011 Thursday, and, in the seven other races, 19 of tho 21 first day's place-getters started again and only six were unplaced. Favourites were exceptionally successful, first fancies on the win machine gaining three victories and second fancies four. The largest dividend, which was under double figures, was returned by Golden Iluia for third in tho Tararu Handicap. Tho Takanini trainer F. J. Smith scored three more wins with Pageant, Raider and Pcgaway, and in the last race Pageant was narrowly. beaten into second place, making the remarkable tally for the meeting of seven wins and one second. Tho canteen of cutlery forming part of the stake in the Goldfields Handicap was received from the president, Mr. J. Twohill, by Mr. E. H. Cucksey, on behalf of tho winning owner, Mr. H. Stafford, of Canterbury. The totalisator handled £9910, compared with £5105 for seven r»aces at the club's I second meeting last season, which was held in May. Investments for tho two days totalled £18,857 10s, against £12,810 for the two one-day meetings last year, an increase of £OOI7 10s, or 46 per cent. Tho attendance was estimated at 4000.
