NORTHCOTE WATER
IMPROVEMENT NOTICEABLE An improvement has taken place in the Northcote water supply, although the experiment for the purification of the Lake Pupuke water at the Northcote intake has not yet been completed. The second chamber of the reservoir has so far not been cleaned. It was intended to do this on Thursday, but the work was delayed. All dead-ends of the mains are scoured every, morning. It is considered by the engineer, Mr. John Williamson, too soon to judge the result of the operation of the filtration through carbon, coke and screens and the aeration of the water, until the reservoir is completely cleansed of all trace of the recent trouble and until the mains are thoroughly flushed. Notwithstanding this, the water drawn from the taps at Northcote households has shown a marked improvement lately. Satisfaction has been expressed by residents at the inexpensive methods initiated by Mr. Williamson toward minimising the trouble, and hopes are entertained of ultimate success.
