INTOXICATED DRIVERS

TWO MEN CONVICTED DOMINION ROAD COLLISION' Two men appeared in the Police Court yesterday before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., charged with being found in a state of intoxication while in charge of motorvehicles.

An allegation of being intoxicated in charge of a motor-car in Dominion Road on Thursday evening was admitted by Frederick Patrick Jones, aged 26, engineer (Mr. Bryce Hart). \

Detective-Sergeant McHugh said that at about 11 p.m. 011 Tharsday a motor-car driven by accused struck a taxi-cab ftfc the intersection of Dominion and Shackleton Roads. The accident was caused by ao< cused cutting the corner. Both vehicle! were damaged; Mr. Hart said accused had no liquor in the evening. The accident was caused by. the steering-wheel breaking. _ Accused was fined £25. and his licence was cancelled for 12 months.

Amos Culbert, aged 38, carrier, was charged with being intoxicated in charge of a motor-truck in Syinonds Street. Mr.Sullivan, who represented accused, entered a plea of guilty. Walter L. Marshall, an Auckland City Council traffic inspector, said that" at 5.15 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, when traffic! was heavy at the Symonds Street-Khyber Pass intersection, accused drove his truck in front of a tramcar and through another line of traffic, in spite of witness* signal to the contrary. Witness overtook accused in another lorry, and found he was un-. steady. Mr. McHugh: It. was not a bad case.

Mr. Sullivan said the truck was accused's only means of earning a living* He had taken only two beers, and would take out a prohibition order. The Magistrate: You have been convicted twice previously of similar offences, in 1930 and 1931, but 1' will give you one last chance.

Accused was fined £5, and was prohibited for a year.
