A PROMISING TWO-YEAR-OLD

BAYACRE'S IMPROVEMENT [by TELEGRAPH—OWN correspondent] WELLINGTON. Friday Bay Tree, who -defeated a. hot favourite in Diatomous in the two-yoar-old race at Woodville on Wednesday, is a big brown coll. by Chief Ruler from Bayloch, an English niaro imported for Mr. John Donald's Westniere stud. Bay Tree cost Mr. E. J. Watt 360 guineas at tho Trontham sales and is a brother to Azalea. He ran unplaced each day at Hastings on January 2 and 3, niul Woodvillo was only his third start, so he haa quickly made good. He is a very big colt and would pass for a three-year-old. Ho is just the typo to make a fine sprinter, and should carry substantial weights without difficulty. Senior and Aesculus have beon returned to Okawa. Mr. V. Riddiford, who has been indisposed gince the Wellington summer meeting, was unable to see his team perform so successfully on the ' TaranakiWanganui circuit, but he attended tho Woodvillo meeting and saw Clangor and Might win. Eminent did not start at the meeting. There is nothing wrong with him, but ho has never run well under weight. Advantage was taken of tho racing at Woodvillo this week to give Princess Doreen and Bed Manfred a gallop in public. L. Wilson took tho filly over on Wednesday and she rail threo furlongs in 345. Yesterday Red Manfred, wido out, ran half a mile in 475. Both Bhapcd well, and while the track was fast they were both brilliant performances, fhey will meet again in the champion two-year-old race at Wellington.

It took Bayacre a long time to return to- the winning list, and he was a costly failure to his owner-trainer, .A. D. Web-' ster, iu,.Australia. Ilia win yesterday was a narrow one, but ho put in a solid finish, and na further improvement should result Bayacre is one to he kept in mind for events ahead.
