OIL FROM COAL
ADMIRALTY PLACES ORDER IMPORTANCE TO THE NAVY (■Received February 10, 11.33 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 10 The first order of its kind in naval history has been given by the. Admiralty. This is for one year's bulk supplies of oil made from British coal. It marks the most notable development in the oil- ! from-coal industry. The contract has been placed with Low Temperature Carbonisation, Limited. It follows two years of secret research by experts of the company and the Admiralty, after which the final specification of coalite oil fuel was perfected. Exhaustive trials made on the destroyer Westminster indicate that her cruising radius was increased compared with that given by petroleum oil. This is vitally important, from a naval point of view. The company claims that if the smokeless fuel and oil-fiom-coal industries continue to develop normally, the day is not far distant when the Navy will be able to rely exclusively on British sources for its oil fuel.
