OPENING OF ROAD
WHANGARATA TO POKENO PROVISION OF BRIDGES [from otjr own correspondent! PUKEKOHE, Friday A decision to ask the Main Highways Board to co-operate with the Franklin County Council to have the new Whanga-rata-Pokcno Road opened in the near future was made by the Pukekohe Chamber of Commerce last evening. The president, Mr. W. M. S. Hood, presided. Advice was received from the Franklin County Council that the road was recently declared a highway, as it, would complete a through route from Drury to Pokeno, via Pukekohe and Tuakau, and would give a more direct outlet south to a large portion of Franklin and Raglan counties. Application had been made to the Highways Board for a vote of £550 at £2 for £l, to provide the cost of erecting two bridges required to make the road available for traffic, a further vote of £1 for £1 for metalling to follow when the funds of the board allowed. However, no money for the purpose had yet been made available. It was mentioned that the council was considering the quest'on of having temporary bridge crossings erected, while it had also provided a camp on the road with a view to arranging for relief workers to start the metalling. Members of (he chamber expressed the view that if the Highways Board would now assist financially the road could soon be made available. It was decided to ask (lie Tuakau and Pokeno Chambers of Commerce to approach the board in the matter.
