DOMESTIC SCIENCE
MANAGING THE HOME TRAINING IN ENGLAND An interesting description of the course of training carried out at the Gloucester Domestic Science Training College was given by Miss Betty Stewart, B.H.Sc., of Otago University, who was appointed two and a-half years ago to a lectureship in domestic science at Gloucester, and returned to Wellington this week. " It has been a most interesting and stimulating experience to have been in such close contact with student life in England," stated Miss Stewart to a Post representative. "I was privileged ir. being the third Otago graduate to be appointed as lecturer in science on the staff of the Training College of - Domestic Science in Gloucester. " The Gloucester Training College." she said, " runs four courses, the first being a degree course in conjunction with the University of Bristol, to which the college is affiliated. It is remarkable that this training should be so well established in New Zealand long before England. That this is the case is largely due to the persevering efforts and the benefaction of Colonel John Studholme, of Canterbury. " The second course is for the teaching diploma, a three-year course, specialisation taking place in the third year in either science and cookery or needlework and dressmaking. " The third course, termed the 'lnstitutional Management Course,' is becoming very popular. This deals with bigscale cooking, housekeeping and ordering, etc., for institutions, and also includes sound grounding in the principles of normal nutrition. Excellent practice is obtained, a s these students run the big new residential hostel, the finest of its kind in England. Students from this group obtain posts as matrons, hotel or restaurant hostesses, lady cooks, etc. " The fourth course, or household management course, is a brief one, lasting three terms. It attracts girls about to be married or those intending to live at home. It is almost entirely practical—including cookery, needlework, and dressmaking, laundry work and hygiene.
