MAN'S NECK FRACTURED FATALITY ON A FARM YOUTH'S COURAGEOUS ACT j [by TELEGRAPH —OWN correspondent] Hastings, Monday A farmer, Mr. James Starnes, aged 55, had his neck broken at Haumoana, near Napier, through being charged by a Jersey bull this morning. He remained fully con- ;: scious and was able to converse with his wife until his death three hours after the accident.
Mr. Starnes was attempting to remove the bull from one paddock to another when lie was viciously attacked by tlie animal for no apparent reason. He was knocked down and his neck was fractured. The accident was witnessed by Mr. ; Staines' step-daughter and a boy, E, Ceaumont, who works on the farm, but, the attack was so sudden that neither of them was able to do anything to prevent it. However, the youth courageously drove the animal away from the prostrate form of Mr. Starnes and rendered what assistance he could until medical aid could be summoned.
In spite of the severe nature of his injury, Mr. Starnes retained consciousness until his death three hours later. He conversed freely with his wife and with I jr. D. A. Bathgate, of Hastings, who attended him.
