NOTES ON THE RACING

SUCCESS OF ROMAN MASCOT HIGH-WEIGHT TO THESPIS HAMPTON PARK'S GOOD WIN BY ARCHER The three-year-old filly Roman Mascot opened her winning account with a nice win in the Moana Handicap, for which she was a good third fancy to Diversion and Arawa Rose. Roman Mascot was first away, but McTavish steadied her in behind the leader", Fouhvind and Toplight, along the back and followed them until reaching the turn. Roman Mascot then secured an opening between them and finished on strongly to win from Fouhvind, who stayed on fairly well to return a good price for second. Arawa Rose ran on at, the end to get third and Pelting, who drew out wide, and had none the best of the running, ran a vcVy creditable fourth. Monanui was closer at the finish than at any other stage, but Diversion weakened at the end after showing plenty of speed in the middle stages. Roman Mascot has been an unlucky filly and with better fortune sho would probably liavo won before, litis, She is making good" progress at present, and now that she has broken the ice sho may not bo long in winning again. The Sprint Contest Exaggeration and Paganelli were the favourites for the Suburban Handicap and both ran good races only to bo well beaten by the third fancy, Hampton Park, who was one of the leaders from barricr-risfc, and won well at the finish. Miss Lorraine. Hampton Park, Whakapara and Tetrarchatc raced in close company in the lead until nearing the homo turn, where Hampton Park drew out and Exaggeration. Lucidus and Paganelli closed up. Hampton Park gave nothing a chance at the finish and won easily from Exaggeration, with Paganelli finishing well in third position. The winner's victory was very decisive and made some amcuds for previous disappointments. Until a few months ago Hampton Park was raced on lease by Mrs. I. Docherty, but he is now carrying the colours of his owner, Mr. A. E. Watkins. and is trained by H. Caldqr, at Avondale. Exaggeration and Paganelli ran good races and Paganelli would liavo been much more troublesome if he had not got away badly. On the strength of her first day's victory Ornamental was made a better favourite than Thespis for tho Waiwera High-weight Handicap, but the latter again asserted his superiority and beat her fairly decisively. Thespis allowed Free Air and Glenhaupo to make the running until about half-a-milo from home, when he assumed command and the only ono to give him any trouble afterwards was Ornamental. It looked as if the favourite might win when sho moved up sharply at the turn, but Thespis was doing it well and held off her challenge in the run home. The others were well beaten and Demylus was a moderato third, with Motero a poor fourth. The support accorded to Motero indicated that ho was expected to do better over the longer distance, but ho failed to show an\ particular dash and just plodded on at. the one pace. Thespis again proved himself a good horse in high-weight company and Ornamental's performance demonstrated that she is not lacking in stamina. King's Knave Beaten King's Knave, at odds-on. and Biokcn Rule were the favourites for the Wynyard Plato and they filled the dividend-places in reverse order. Broken Rulo hopped out smartly from No. 1 and. led all the way. but was all out at the finish to _ win by a neck from King's Knave, who issued a determined challenge iti the straight. The winner was responsible for a. nice performance, but King's Knave, would hn\e given her more trouble if he had jumped out Cleanly and not had to be kicked hard to hold his position on the rails going round the first turn. Prolyxo and Mtingatcon both ran creditable races and Arawa Rose did surprisingly well for. a "ovice Sho lost, abo at six lengths at the strut and even, then was showing up on the outside, not far behind the leaders. . at the home, turn. Arawa Rose eventually , b,t and it doe 3 not seem as if will bo lonz before she wins. disidayed plen v of pace only <o weaken m the stl!l V h S a Moonfleet also retired after being well placed until reaching the turn. . , , rrroit The Hob son Handicap provided a^reat finish between the three favomite. < iud're declared a dead-heat, between Mestor and Gay Sheila, with a. neck away third, the run , strik favoured King Mestor, who displayed < sti in*» improvement upon his lirht day 8 ri J n ning. He was unable to hold the lead after getting the best of the start from No. 1. but was able to remain handy, while Gay Sheila and Deputy Ruler were keeping one another going in front across the top Voitre was urging him at the turn, bit Gay Sheila and Deputy Ruler tired a little toward the end, and King Mestor was thus able to make a dead-heat with Gay Sheila, who ran right up to his first day s form Deputy Ruler ran another good race, but was steadied by his rise of 12lb in weight. An End to End Win I Eager Rose, fifth fancy in a field of six, i was responsible for a mild surprise in-win-ning the Takapnna Jockey Club Handicap, for which Master Brierly was an odds-on favourite over Merry Damon. Eager liose made a one-horse race of it, getting to the front quickly and' winning easily from i Merry Damon, who acrain finished on well. : Jalldy Karo ran a fair race for third, but i the others were well beaten. „ , . Eager Rose was unlucky on the first day, ! hut on this occasion she made every post I winner and romped home. Master j3neiJy i was a great disappointment and never I flattered the hopes of his supporters at any stage. He was last early and, although he j moved up slightly in the middle stages, was I never dangerous in the last, half-mile. His ■ form was too bad to be true, and he should | not be discredited for the defeat. Merry Lap and Pelting were the favourites | for the Rungitoto Hack Handicap and Peltj ing won narrowly, although he appealed I very lucky to beat Bugle Call, who was | tailed off last most of the way. Pelting was favoured with a good run behind the pace- • makers United and Merry Lap and when Voitre asked him for an effort entering the | straight he soon assumed command. Momentarily it appeared as if he would win com- | fortably, but he was all out at the post to just beat, the fast-finishing Bugle Call, who i came with ft great, rattle. If Bugle Call's I rider had moved him up a. little when ho i could easily have done so along the back, . he must, have won. Transaction ran a creditj able ruce for third and Currnjong was a i close fourth. United was not. forward enough |to run the nine furlongs right out and | Merry Lap also tired at the end. Paganelli's Victory Paganelli was a better favourite than Limex for the Anniversary Handicap and carried his 10.7 to will like a racehorse. It was a case of a good horse being capable of carrying a big weight and beating moderate opposition. Paganelli got to the front before going three furlongs and was never afterwards headed, winning well at the finish from Chief Joy, who just secured second honours after a hard struggle with Teels and Limex. Paganelli is wearing particularly well and his consistency at the meeting was appreciated by tho public, which gave him a tine reception when ho returned to the enclosure. Chief Cook did not race up to expectations, but showed a lot of dash early, and should come into his own later 011.
