EXPORTS FROM THE EAST PROBLEM FOR DOMINION AN OFFER FROM JAPAN The export to New Zealand of goods from Eastern countries was referred to by the president of the Canterbury Manufacturers' Association, Mr. F. L. Hutchinson, at a meeting of the executive ccm-. mittee of the association last week, as one of the most serious problems facing the New Zealand manufacturer to-day. Mr. Hutchinson said the question had been discussed with the Customs Department by ft meeting of the Manufacturers' Federation in Wellington which he had attended. Mr. Hutchinson quoted passages from a letter received by his firm from an exporting firm in Yokohama, Japan, referring to the possibility of building up a footwear, export trade to the Dominion. "Our manufacturers are very anxious," said the letter, "to receive'export orders not only for children's sandals, but also for regular men's shoes and boots, which latter are their principal products, in view of tho fact that the domestic trade, as » rule, slackens down toward January and February, and they have very little work to do until the middle of September. "If they can fill the gap of this slack period with export orders to be shipped between March and August, they will be able to reduce their working costs in general considerably, and they say they are quite willing to work on our orders at reduced prices, provided, of course, that the cost of materials remains unchanged. "In order to show you what they are manufacturing," the letter concluded, "we will be sending you by the next mail a few samples of men's shoes, prices ranging from 5s 8d to 9s 4d a pair e.i.f. Lyttelton." "It seems," remarked Mr. Hutchinson, "that the deluge from tho East is already upon us."
