BOXING IN LONDON

NEUSEL DEFEATS COOK SPECTATORS RESENT VERDICT (Received January 24 , 9.35 p.m.) LONDON", Jan. 23 In a 12-rounds boxing contest in the Albert Hall, Walter Neusel (Germany) defeated Gecrge Cook (Australia) on points. Neusel opened by punching his opponent powerfully. He rattled Cook. with three uppercuts. The Australian was fleet-footed and punished the German with his favourite left hook to the jaw. Neusel exploited his longer reach and scored several letts but failed to evade Cook and stopped repeated heavy rights to the jaw. Cook's greater experience often nonplussed the German. The bout continued even till the seventh round when Cook forced the German to his corner and sent in a terrific right to the jaw. Neusel's counters did not affect the stocky Australian. Even more vigorous boxing followed. Cook was magnificent, leaving nothing to chance and exhibiting sound defence.

In the ninth round Cook rushed Neusel to the ropes but was steadied by a tremendous left hook. The German scored with both hands. In the tenth round vicious rights sent the Australian's head back. Apparently he was beaten but he returned and fought like a fury. Both men stood exchanging punches in the last round. Cook, in his eagerness to land a terrific right in the twelfth round, swung himself to the floor. The decision was greeted by several minutes of boohing. When it was announced that Cook was 35 years old today the Australian received a wonderful ovation.
