SEQUEL TO "JOY RIDE"
CHARGE AGAINST MAORI COURT DISMISSES CASE [BY TELEGRAPH —O'.VN CORRESPONDENT] OPOTIKI, "Wednesday .'A "joy ride" in a motor-car at Tckaha on Monday, in which two brothers, Henry and Peter Collier, together with two Maori girls and a Maori, Mutu Kerilceri, took part, had a sequel in the Opotiki Magistrate's Court to-day, when Kerikeri was charged with converting the car to his own use without intent of theft.
In evidence, Henry Collier stated that the three., men met at Tckaha and had several drinks. They went for a drive ■with the two girls. Four members of the party got out of the car, leaving Keri.ieri in charge. When- witness returned the car had disappeared, later being found badly smashed over a bank. Collier denied giving the Maori permission to drive the car away. Defending counsel said that Collier not •only gave accused permission to drive away, but showed him how to work the ;gears. The car was valued at £75 and ■was covered by insurance. The evidence ■was so conflicting that the Bench decided accused must be given the benefit of the doubt. The charge was dismissed.
