DEFEAT OF WELLINGTON" SOME REMARKABLE BOWLING BADCOCK'S SPLENDID FIGURES [by telegraph—press association] WELLINGTON. Wednesday Otago scored a clear-cut victory over Wellington in the Plunket Shield by 77 runs. The Southerners owed their victory to superb bowling by Badcock, who, bowling unchanged, sent down 59.1 overs, 30 of which were maidens, and he captured six wickets for 72 runs. Dunning also put up a fine bowling performance, only 73 runs coming from his 41 overs. Hawkesworth did brilliant work with the gloves, his taking on tho leg side being first-class. The weather was beautifully fine and the wicket easy when Massey, 14, and James, 0, set out at 11 o'clock this morning in an endeavour to get the 264 runs Wellington required to win with eight wickets still in hand. Badcock and Dunning bowled so accurately that only nine runs were scored in 35 minutes. Badcock bowled ten maidens in succession and, with the total at 24, he had Massey caught in tho slips by Elmes. Massey had added three runs to his oveinighfc scoro in 35 minutes. Dempster joined James and was ironically cheered for breaking Badcock's run of ten successive maidens by scoring a sharply-run single to cover. James' and Dempster made a serviceable) stand, although both were very watchful. At 63 Elmes relieved Dunning, off whose 17 overs only 26 runs had been scoied. The batsmen relished the advent of the left-hander, off whom they made several powerful hook shots. With the total at 75, James, who had played a sound innings for 24, attempted to leg glide one of Badcock's off breaks and was brilliantly taken behind the wickets by Hawkesworth. James had been at f,he wickets for 101 minutes —a tribute to the accuracy of the Otago bowling. Dempster's Sound Batting Joined by O'Brien, the Hawke's Bay colt, Dempster continued to score steadily, With the total at 103, however, the Wellington professional, who had just passed the half-century, was bowled by one from Dunning, which made pace from the pitch. Dempster had batted very soundly for his 52, which included five boundary strokes. With the total at 139, O'Brien opened out to Badcock and placed the ball into Knight's hands at mid-off. He had shaped brilliantly for his 25, and assisted McGirr to put on 36 for the sixth wicket.

Lambert came next, but failed to score, popping the third ball he received from Badcock into Elmes' hands in the slips.

The partnership had put on 25 for the eighth wicket. Coupland had taken one wicket for one run. Knight Drops Chances Parsloe followed and was dropped by Knight at mid-off in Badcock's next over. McGirr reached 30 with a four past cover off Coupland and off the same over Knight dropped Parsloe at mid-off, this making his third mulled chance of the match. At the tea adjournment the scons was 181 for eight wickets, McGirr being 34 and Parsloe 3.

With his total at 38, McGirr, who had played a stubborn innings of 119 minutes, played one from Badcock into Moloney s hands at second slip, giving Badcock his fifth wicket.

Blundell, tJie last man, joined Parsloe and 200 came up at 4.30 p.m. The end came at 4.35 p.m., when the. Otago captain clean-bowled Blundell, who had just reached doubles. The innings realised 201, which gave Otago an outright victory bv 77 runs. The winning team came in for hearty congratulations on its success.
