CHRISTMAS TELEGRAMS
LARGE NUMBERS SENT , MORE INWARD MESSAGES No fewer than 73.547 telegrams, about three times the average number, were dealt with at the Chief Post Office in the three days preceding Christmas Day. This increase is due principally to the large numbers of special Christmas greeting messages. The total, however, represents a considerable decrease on last year's figure for the corresponding period, 86,056. The greatest proportion is comprised of " transmits," or telegrams which pass through Auckland between offices to the north and the south. The number of messages received by Aucklanders during the three days was 10,498, while the outward messages were considerably fewer, only 7632 having been lodged for transmission. The figures for the days are as follows, last year's totals being given in parentheses December 22: Despatched, 1513 (1968); received, 2947 (3112); transmits, 9529 (8782). December 23: Despatched. 3365 (2471); received, 4101 (4208); transmits, 16,667 (15,809). December 24: Despatched, 2754 (5193); received, 3450 (6447); transmits, 29,221 (38,066).
