CAGED WITH BEARS
NERVE-WRACKING ORDEAL ANIMAL TRAINER'S EXPERIENCE LONDON, Dec. 17 "The most nerve-wracking ordeal I have ever experienced," said the animal trainer Janesco last night, on emerging from a cage in which he had been confined in the dark for a quarter of an hour Avith six polar bears. Janesco was performing wilii a circus in a Nottingham music hall when the city's electricity supply failed and the theatre was plunged into gloom.
Janesco had been attacked the previous night by one of the bears, and saw in the dim light the same animal approaching, followed by others. He kept them at bay with his whip, circling the cago several times as two bears leaning against the door prevented his getting out.
"Polar bears aro ferocious and untrustworthy," he said. "I felt them rubbing against mo in the darkness, and one scratched my, trouser-leg. I knew that if he drew blood the others would instantly rend me. I could just see their green eyes and white fur, but the bea<rs are able to see in the dark. It was the longest quarter of an hour I have known."
