TENNIS VICTORY
AMEEICANS SUPERIOR DECISIVE MARGIN SHOWN McGRATH DEFEATS GLEDHILL AUSTRALIANS LOSE DOUBLES By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received December 28, 11.35 p.m.) SYDNEY. Dec. 28 The international lawn tennis match between the touring American team and Australia concluded to-day and resulted in a win for the Americans. The final result was:— America. —Eight rubbers, 22 sets, 203 games. Australia.—Four rubbers, 15 sets, 174 games. To-day's games resulted: —V. McGrath (Australia) defeated K. Gledhill (America), 6_3, 6—3.
W. Allison (America) defeated H. Hopman (Australia), B—6, 6—4, 6—o. J. Van Ryn (America) defeated C. Sproule (Australia), 6—-3, 4—6, 6—2. Vines and Gledhill defeated Hopman and Crawford, 11 —9, 3—6, 6—4, 6 —2. Conditions were perfect. McGrath created a surprise by defeating Gledhill, raising Australia's hopes. Hopman, who had played brilliantly throughout the test, went down to Allison through superior courtcraft. Van Ryn's victory over Sproule was unexpected, but his service and reliability countered Sproule's shots. Hopman and Crawford, after their defeat of Allison and Van Ryn yesterday, were disappointing, although their play was not of such a high standard. Vines and Gledhill paired much better, and on present form are the better pair. Crawford appeared listless and in need of a spell. Hopman's backhand was weak. AUSTRALIANS PRAISED BETTER ON HOME COURTS VINES NOT A SECOND TILDEN LONDON, Dec. 27 The newspapers are making features of the America-Australia tennis matches, particularly Hopman's defeat of Vines and the latter's revenge upon Crawford. Mr. Wallis Myers, in the Daily Telegraph, says the Australians have showft that on their home courts they are in the same class as the Americans. Owing to the "pillar to post" itinerary which a European tour imposes, often with a different kind of court and a different kind of ball in each city, the Australians are rarely seen to the best advantage out of their own country. The Australian matches show that Vines, with all his talents, is not yet a second Tilden.
