PUREWA CEMETERY
Sir,—"This is God's acre, have respect for the graves of the dead." Everyone who has relatives or friends in Purewa is familiar with the above, but I wonder if it over strikes those responsible for the upkeep of the cemetery that it applies to them as much as to the general public. Last year was pretty bad, but this year the whole cemetery is a waist-high forest of wild daisies. Are these weeds going to be allowed to seed again this year ? Surely there are plenty of unemployed whose services could be used with advantage. It is absolutely heartbreaking to try to make any sort of a garden, literally hundreds of graves are wiped right out. I have seen many a "God's acre" in various towns, both here and abroad, but Purewa is the wbrst. The pathway to our own plot has almost disappeared. First it was over-run with blackberries, and we fought that; then wild convolvulus, and we fought that, but the wild daisies have beaten us; we give it up. As for the entrance to where it forks I suppose that will be made safe after the first fatal accident. Anglican.
