RETURN ON INVESTMENTS

Following is a list of yesterday's transactions on New Zealand Stock Exchanges. In the second column is given the return, based on the last annual dividend, from investment at the quoted price. In the case of Government and other redeemable securities no return is given, in view of the new method of quotation, but the months in which interest is due are shown. In calculating the return on shares in companies which pay their dividends outside New Zealand exchange rates, being liable to fluctuation, have not been taken into consideration.

On the Sydney Stock Exchange to-day there was more activity and banks were disposed to strengthen. Colonial Sugars recovered further. Henry Jones, Tooth's Brewery and Goldsbrough-Morts were a shade weaker. There was little change in Commonwealth bonds.

This morning's sales were: Commonwealth 4 per cent bonds, 1941, £IOO 17s 6d; 1947, £lOl 2s 6d; 1953, £lOl 15s; 1955, £lOl 18s 9d; 1959, £IOO 15s; 1961, £lOl 2s 6d; British Tobacco, 355; Colonial Sugar, £53 ss; Goldsbrough-Mort, 24s 9d; Henry Jones, 38s 9d.

Closing sales were: Bank of New South Wales, £3O 10s; Commercial Bank of Sydney, £l6 ss; Commercial Bank of Australia, New Zealand delivery, 16s; Colonial Sugar, £53 7s 6d; Burns Philp. 495; Goldsbrough-Mort, 24s 9d; Henry Jones, 38s 3d; Australian Glass, 44s 3d; British Tobacco, 355; Tooth's Brewery, 36s 3d; Toohey's Brewery, 21s 6d; North Broken Hill, 73s 9d. The New York rate for sterling is the lowest since December 7, 1931, when quotations fell to 3.23 and recovered to 3.25^.
