LATE MR. CHARLES RHODES

ATTENDANCE AT FUNERAL

REPRESENTATIVE GATHERING

The liigli esteem of the community for the late Mr. Charles Rhodes and tlio universal regret at his death were expressed by tho very largo gathering at his funeral, which took place at Purewa Cemetery yesterday. Those present included not only many members of Rotary, in which Mr. Rhodes held high office, and of the Masonic Order, New Zealand Constitution, of which ho was a past-grand warden, but representatives of every department in the financial and commercial life of Auckland, of public and semipublic bodies and many personal friends in all walks of life. . A short service for members of the family was conducted at Ronaki, Mr. Rhodes' residence in Remuera Road, by the Rev. J. A. Thomson, minister of St. Luke's Presbyterian Church. The coffin was borne from the house by the president of the Auckland Rotary Club, Mr. T. U. Wells, and live past-presidents, Sir George Fowlds, Mr. S. Reid, Mr., li. T. Goldie, Mr. Kenneth Mackenzie and Mr. J. F. Ewen. Two other past-presidents, Mr. W. J. Holdsworth and Mr \V. Coltman, were in attendance.

The chief mourners were Mr. Rhodes' two sons, Mr. F. N. Rhodes and Mr. E. 11. Rhodes; his brother, Mr. Harry Rhodes, of Te Awannjtu ; Mr. 0. H. Jfurness, son-in-law, and Mr. C. .V. Houghton, brother-in-law.

Graveside Services

It had boon requested that no wreaths should be sent, but some half-dozen, including one from the Board of Rotary International, Chicago, were laid upon tho coffin.

At the grave the service of committal was conducted by the Rev. J. A. Thomson, assisted by the Rev. W. Lawson Marsh. After t*he committal the Masonic burial rite was conducted by M. W. Bro. 0. Nicholson, pro-grand master of the Grand Lodge of New Zealand, of which Mr. Rhodes was a past-grand warden, and Sir George Fowlds, I'.D.G.M. At its conclusion the large gathering of brethren present, including members of Lodge Ara, No. 1, to which Mr. Rhodes had long been attached, threw into the grave sprigs of acacia, symbolic of immortality. Rotary International, of the board of which Mr. Rhodes had been a member, was officially represented at the funeral by Sir George Fowlds. Sir George acted as deputy for Mr. S. L. P. Free, of Masterton, a vice-president of Rotary International and a member of the board, who had been requested by cablegram to act, but who was unable to be present. In addition to the officers mentioned, the Auckland Rotary Club was represented by Mr. H. Horton, vice-president; Mr. C. A. Whitney, Mr. J. T. F. Mitchell and Mr. E. E. Kitchener, directors, and a very large muster of members.
