Several weeks ago tlie Railway Department advised the Wliangaaei Harbour Board that the railway service from Whangarei to Onerahi would cease on Decent her 31, and requested the hoard lo complete the removal of the board's wharf from Onerahi to Kioreroa by that date. However, the board found that the work could not ho completed until March 31, and asked the Railway Department to keep the service open until that date. No reply had been received until to-day, when tho following telegram was ieeeived from the district engineer, Auckland:—"After careful investigation tho Kioreroa Bridge on the Onerahi sidelino lias been found unsafe, and until further advice trains are not to be run to One : rahi."
The position is now that Whangarei docs not possess a deep-water port until the removal of the wharf from Onerahi to Kiororoa is completed. The decision of the Railway Department will be felt considerably in tho district. It is understood the. Hikurangi Coal Company, Limited, will rail its coal direct to Auckland.
