RAIN AND SUNSHINE
HEAVY ISOLATED FALL
DRY CONDITIONS IN CITY
AMPLE SUPPLY OF WATER
Extremely heavy ruin, confined almost entirely to tlio neighbourhood of Mount Albert, fell shortly after 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon, while there was no sign of » break in the warm summer weather experienced in the city and in most of tho other suburbs. The rainfall was singularly local, a typical Auckland summer downpour, and while gutters were practically awash in Mount Albert, people in the city were finding conditions stilling.
Later in tho afternoon there was a second shower, spread over a wider area. Light rain which fell in Epsom and Green Lane about 3.30 provided some measure of relief from the extremely sultry conditions. There was no rain in the city, where a heavy fall would have been most welcome.
The effect of the warm dry spell is making itself felt in the increased uso of water from tho city supply. The consumption at present is about 10,000,000 gallons a day, compared with an average of 8,500,000 gullons. There is no fear that a shortage will occur. The city waterworks engineer, Mr. A. D. Mead, stated yesterday that the dams in the Waitakere Ranges were almost full, the supply boing regarded as ample to meet the summer demand.
November so far has proved an unusually dry month. Whereas the average November rainfall is 3.30 in., the fall to date this month is little more than o.sin.
