CHRISTMAS MAIL
LAST DESPATCH TO BRITAIN
FINAL POSTINb TO-DAY
The last mail to reach Great Britain before Christmas will be despatched from Auckland, via Los Angeles, to-day by the Oceanic Company's liner Mariposa, which is to sail at five o'clock this evening. The mail is scheduled to reach London on December 20.
Although a large amount of Christmas mail was sent to Groat Britain, via Vancouver, by the Royal Mail liner Niagara last Tuesday, the mail which will be despatched by the Mariposa to-day will be a fairly heavy one. Yesterday the Postal Department was kept busy sorting Christmas letters and packages, also second-class matter, including a considerable number of copies of the Christmas issue of the Auckland Weekly News. The postings to-day are expected to be heavier than yosterday and the department advises the public to post as early as possible to avoid a last-minute rush, which would cause congestion and make the handling of the mail more difficult. The closing time for the letter mail is three o clock this afternoon, but secondclass matter will close half an hour earlier. The postage rate on the Christmas number of the Auckland Weekly News to be despatched for Great Britain by tlie Mariposa's mail is fivepence.
