AMATEUR WRESTLING

DOMINION CHAMPIONSHirS

RESULTS OF FIRST NIGHT

FINAL BOUTS THIS EVENING

The annual amateur wrestling championships of New Zealand were commenced at Scots Hall last evening under tho control of tlio Auckland Wrestling Association. There was only. a moderate attendance of the public. Competitors were present from the Wellington, Wanganui, Hawke's Bay, Palmerston North and Waikato Associations. The wrestling was hard and keen without being very spectacular owing to the barring of certain holds. A special challenge bout between K. Kenneth and A. Antonovitch, two light-heavy-weights, of Auckland, proved very entertaining, the spectators being thoroughly roused when the referee became mixed up with the contestants and was fastened in a body scissors and arrobar. The officials were as follows: —RefereeSj, Messrs. C. Pollard and V. Dunne; judges, Messrs. A. Duthie, W. E. Grant, D. Simpson, C. B. McCarthy; timekeepers, Messrs. C. McCready, C. 11. Hough; announcer, Mr. V Salck. Following are the results: —

BAXTAM-WEIGIIT

Semi-final.—C. Jones (Auckland), Bstv lib., beat Kisha Bana (Auckland), 7st. by one fall, gained in the first round with a reverse headlock and body press. The winner was clearly dominant throughout and possessed a wide margin of points as a result of his aggressiveness. Outweighed and outclassed, Bana fought a game, losing tattle.

FEATHER-WEIGHT

Semi-final. —R. W. Hutcheson (Wellington), Bst. lljib., beat F. E. llaines (Waikato), Bst. 131b., by two falls, gained in the first and third rounds. Hutcheson was the aggressor throughout, displaying a speed and strength which kept liis opponent in subjection throughout.

LIGHT-WEIGHT

First Round.—B. Bullock (Wanganui), 9st. 13A1b., beat K. Brewer (Auckland), 9st. 61b., by one fall, gained in the first round. It was an uninteresting bout, with Bullock exhibiting too much strength. Second Round.—H. Benton, (Palmerston North), 9st. lSjlb., beat A. E. Webb (Waikato), 9st. 21b., by two falls, the winner's strength giving him an advantage which Webb vainly endeavoured to counter with science.

WELTER-WEIGHT

Semi-final. —A. J. Newton (Auckland), lOst. 51b., beat IL Woolston (Waikato), lOst. 61b., on points in a lively and interesting bout. Woolston started well and appeared to build a good margin of points over, the first half of the contest, but a strong recovery by the winner gave him the verdict. Both men worked strenuously from start to finish and exploited all holds possible under thp limited amateur rules.

MIDDLE-WEIGHT

Semi-final.—J. Simpson (Auckland), list. 21b., beat C. Rickards (Wanganui), list. 21b., by one fall, gained in the third round of an uninteresting bout. Both men seldom touched the mat, action being confined to prolonged straining in the referee's hold.

R. Allen (Wellington), list, lib., beat C. Woolston (Waikato), list. 31b., on points. This was a good scientific contest in which both displayed a good knowledge of holds, although no falls were registered.

LIGHT-HEAVY-WEIGHT Semi-final.—R. Douglas (Auckland), 12st. beat P.- Hill (Waikato), 12st. 6Alb., neither securing a fall in a tame bout in which both spent most of th® time on their feet. •

HEAVY-WEIGHT D. Scarrow (Wanganui), 13st. 21b., beat W. Shallock (Auckland), 13sfc. 71b. This was a hard contest in which the pair were continually in grips which took a great deal of breaking.
