DEATH OF CYCLIST
COLLISION WITH A CAR
VERDICT AT THE INQUEST
A verdict of accidental death was returned by Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., coroner, at the inquest yesterday afternoon concerning tho death of Alfred George Alderton, aged 27, who was fatally injured on November 6, when tho motorcycle which he was riding in Sandringhain Road, Mount Albert, collided with a motor-car.
The driver of the car, tho Rev. W. E. Vickery, a minister of the Church of Christ, gave evidence that the accident occurred at about 1 p.m. on November b. After stopping his motor-car in Sandnngham Road, just opposite Taumala Road, witpess commenced to turn Jlie car. lie had completed about five feet of the turn across tho road when ho heard someone call out that a cyclist was approaching. Witness stopped the car, which was travelling very slowly, and a moment later deceased's cycle crashed into it. Before starting to turn his car witness signalled with his hand and took tho usual precautions. Evidence was given by eye-witnesses to the accident that they did not hear de ceased sound the horn on hi 3 cycle. It was a windy clay and deceased was riding into tho wind with his head down. Ho did not appear to see the car. . ]n returning a verdict of accidental death the coroner said that from tho evidence it seemed that deceased was not, looking ahead at the time the car started to turn. As far as Mr. Vickery was concerned it could not bo suggested that ho was negligent in any way.
